View Lot 679 A pair of 19th century percussion cap duelling pistols with 8.5'' octagonal barrel, plain lock plates, and mounted on carved and chequered walnut grips, with steel furniture, overall length 39cm (af) (2). Estimate£150 - £250Winning Bid£520StatusCLOSED Condition ReportBoth pistols hold in the half cocked position and fire from the fully cocked position, but one is crisper than the other and would most likely benefit from a strip clean and rebuild of the lock. Both have bad cracks through the hand of the grips, one had been previously repaired with two plate staples, checkering is worn but still clear, further scuffs and scrapes throughout the woodwork, pitting to the metalwork, one pommel missing a small section of trim, the other with minor losses around the trigger guard, one set with a white metal poncoin the other has the carving for it but poncoin is lacking. There is no evidence of woodworm. The shape of the grip and the pommel on the grip is typical of an Irish pistol and the lock plates and barrels have surface pitting, where it would make any markings indistinguishable, although there are no obvious signs of proof marks on either of the pistols. Potentially stamped to the underside of the barrels below the woodwork. They are at fault, as both of the grips are badly cracked around the hammer and trigger area through the back of the grip. One has had attempted restoration with two large staples, which has been ineffective at bonding the grips back together. Please not that we are unable to post these pistols.
